What Wildbook should this feature be in? Sharkbook
What would you like to see? The addition of Carcharhinus longimanus in the species list of Sharkbook so that we can use it to identify individuals.
How would this functionality help you? We have been gathering data on this species for a while and are hoping to have a steady flow of submission for the next years. We will be analyzing it in the next couple of months and were hoping to use WildMe to do so instead of having to do it manually. Having this project will greatly support other research projects that are currently being conducted.
Note: Not all feature requests can be accepted, but all of them are reviewed by our product team. We’re unable to provide implementation timelines for accepted requests. We are a small team with many competing priorities. Thanks for your understanding!
Hi @linaelsayed03
How do you currently identify individuals for this species?
Hi @Anastasia ,
Currently, to identify individuals for this species we use pictures of the dorsal fin mainly as well as the pectoral fins and tail lobes. You can use the white markings on them as well as scars.
Thank you,

Thanks! We could definitely see how MiewID works on it if we set the fin detector to detect the first dorsal. We can configure it and then you can test it and let us know if it works well enough to find match candidates. Does that work for you?
If you decide you want to do full-body matching, we can start a separate conversation on collecting training data for that.

That sounds great! Thank you very much.
We can definitely try full-body matching as well but it might be better to try and see how MiewID works first.
Thank you for all of your support.
