Cannot add dive site name when entering encounter on Manta Matcher

What Wildbook should this feature be in?
Manta Matcher, but probably necessary in all if they don’t have already

What would you like to see?
A field to write the dive site name. It used to be there on the older version.

How would this functionality help you?
The areas where we see manta rays are huge so we need to know where the ID was taken. The majority of submitters will not bother with the GPS so we will have no idea of where the photo was taken.

If requesting a new location ID, include

  • Is this is nested beneath another location in the hierarchy?
  • Is there a prefix for region-based naming? (optional)
  • GPS coordinates (optional)

Note: Not all feature requests can be accepted, but all of them are reviewed by our product team. We’re unable to provide implementation timelines for accepted requests. We are a small team with many competing priorities. Thanks for your understanding!

Hi @Scubadougal

Are you referring to the Where were you field in the old report an encounter page?

If so, they can still access it using the classic report an encounter option:

Hi Anastasia

Yes, I am referring to the where were you field. I would think people submitting encounters are more likely to click on the first ‘Report an encounter’ and would not know they need to click on the classic to be able to add the dive site name.

In the last two weeks there has been three submissions from the public with only the Location ID ‘Komodo’ so there is no way to know where that photo was taken.

Thanks for confirming!

I know the intention of reducing the number of fields in the updated Report an Encounter page was to simplify the submission process for public submitters. We found that public submitters often skipped the location ID and GPS, which makes matching less efficient as each match run on the submitted images would check for candidates against the global database instead of an existing location ID, which slows down site performance for all users.

Depending on the volume of public submissions for the regions you review, one workaround may be to email the submitter directly to ask for the dive site and update the location description in the encounter.

That said, users do still have the Additional Comments field in the new submission page and have the opportunity to include additional details about the dive site there.
