Identification for tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) now available in Sharkbook

Hello Sharkbook users!

As you may already be aware we had body detections available for tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) but no identification. Today, we’ve configured MiewID and Hostpotter for this species. However there are some things to note before you dive in:

  • We don’t know how well MiewID or HotSpotter work for tiger sharks. Initial testing seems to show it works well, but please give us feedback on it performance as you spend more time reviewing matches.
  • The current detector only draws a body bounding box, which doesn’t seem to result in the strongest matches.
  • You have the option of selecting IA Classes tigershark+fin and tigershark+countershade for your annotations. These likely match individuals much better but must be manually annotated. Tigershark+fin is an annotation around only the fin and tigershark+countershade is an annotation for just the countershaded area.
  • For tiger sharks, we do not filter match candidates on viewpoint (left side, right side) to allow for left and right fin matching. Expect to see left and right side matches in the match results
