In which Wildbook did the issue occur?
Seals Wildbook
What happened?
A student working with submitting 2026 data to Wildbook noticed, that when submitting new encounter, even if you set the species to Pusa hispida saimensis, it changes to Pusa hispida after the encounter is ready. Same thing happened to me when I submitted couple missing encounters from 2024. It seems, that this has happened only after 20th of August (if I search Pusa hispida encounters). There was one older encounter, but I assume that is a mistake when submitted.
*Saimaa ringed seal is now actually recognized as its own species, Pusa saimensis (The Society for Marine Mammalogy), and is no longer considered as a subspecies. That could be changed in Wildbook at some point if it is possible
Thanks for the heads up! It looks like it’s working correctly on the Report an encounter page, but I do see it dropping the subspecies when using the Classic report an encounter page. While we work on a fix, make sure students are using the standard Report an encounter page to submit their seals.
That’s good news about the species clarification! We’ll likely incorporate the Pusa saimensis name as a fix since the three name species can sometimes create unexpected issues in Wildbooks.
Updated!
There should be a broader fix for this in Wildbook 11.0, but in the meantime, the standard encounter reporting will work for any other subspecies until that release is live.
I will inform the students!
And thank you for the species update

Student who uses Student1 username reported today, that submitting doesn’t work on either new or on classic page. New page won’t take photos and classic works otherwise normally, but gets stuck after clicking “send”. I tried new & classic pages and with my user there wasn’t any problems. Student also said, that the internet connection worked normally.
Can you send over an email with the photos they were trying to upload? If the size of the image was over 3MB, it likely would have rejected it.
This solved the problem
Photos were just too big even after cropping.
