User Access - Read Only Access

For Sharkbook.ai, after speaking to a number of other shark scientists including Simon Pierce and Christine Dudgeon, we would like to request for a type of user access that is read only - so that we can get interns to review encounters without editing.

I believe this can be achieved by creating a new user but not giving them any roles. Let me do some testing and get back to you on this.

Thanks for your patience!

After testing for a bit, a user without roles can:

  • submit encounters
  • use the search feature
  • access some data integrity tools

a user without roles can’t:

  • send collaboration requests
  • start a match
  • view match results
  • edit encounters they’ve uploaded (including deleting the encounter or adding a new photo to an existing encounter)
  • export search results
  • create projects
  • view sightings (even ones they uploaded)
  • submit or view bulk imports
  • view Grid Administration

Is there an ability to create a role that is inbetween?

I would really like a role that can start a match and review match results, without the edit encounter ability.

I.e. the ability to:

  1. submit encounters
    2. use the search feature
    3. access some data integrity tools
    4. start a match
    5. view match results
    6. view sightings
    7. submit or view bulk imports
    8. view Grid Administration
But cannot edit encounters or export search results.

This is really important for us to be able to keep up with the amount of workload.

No, not currently. There aren’t any immediate plans to further segment roles and permissions.

If you search Feature Requests that have the user-management tag, you’ll find a lot of older requests for differing levels of granularity in permissions that haven’t moved forward because of the complexity to implement and the lack of broad agreement on which features each role should access.
