Amphibian & Reptile Wildbook Low Recapture Recognition Rate

What Wildbook are you working in?

ARW

What is the entire URL out of the browser, exactly where the error occurred?

Can you describe what the issue is you’re experiencing?

Hi,

a few days ago, a user
contacted me reporting that they had quite low recognition rates of true
recaptures of fire salamanders in their project in ARW. To their
project „Bsal – Ratiger Wald“ with 248 encounters, another 27 encounters
were added. Of these 27 encounters, one recapture was recognized by the
AI (mewID I guess) but the user found another four recaptures among
their encounters. Therefore, only 20 % of the known recaptures were
recognized by the AI. The user thinks that the higher the number of
encounters, the lower the accurracy of the identification got.

Similarly, in my project “Uni Bielefeld- Adults Kottenforst”, I have had
a recapture recognition rate of ~ 50 %. I was able to recognize
recaptures through toe clips for tissue sampling and if I encountered a
fire salamander with a clipped toe, I knew it had to be a recapture and
by going through my photos, I was able to identifiy the individual. I
did this this for the individuals that were not identfied as recaptures
by the AI.

We are wondering if you could look into this problem? Is there a way to
improve the accuracy of the identification? It feels to me that the AI
got less accurate over time (not necessarily that it got less accurate
with more encounters in a project).

Can you provide steps on how to reproduce what you’re experiencing?

hi @Max.Muehlenhaupt

Can you share examples of encounters or match pages where Wildbook failed to display a correct match and let us know which ID it was supposed to match to? This information will help us start researching why this is happening.
