Automatic vs. manual annotations

What Wildbook are you working in?
Seals Wildbook

What is the entire URL out of the browser, exactly where the error occurred?
Cropped version of the photo that automatic annotations were created for: Seals Wildbook

Uncropped version where I made a manual annotation: Seals Wildbook

Can you describe what the issue is you’re experiencing?
When I upload an uncropped version of my harbor seal photo to Wildbook no annotations are automatically created. This in itself is not surprising since the individual does not take up a majority of the photo. When I create my own annotation I have the option to choose the iaClass vitulina or harbour_seal. When I upload a cropped version of the photo Wildbook is able to create automatic annotations. In the link above two annotations were created one for the full animal (seal+head) and one for just the head (seal). When I hover over those annotations it also says they are for the left viewpoint.
My questions/issues are:
What is the difference between the two iaClasses vitulina and harbour_seal?
Why are the iaClasses for automatic annotations not available for me to use when making manual annotations?
Why cannot I not see that I selected the frontleft viewpoint for the manual annotation when I hover over the annotation? I am able to see it for the automatic ones.
Why do the automatic annotations result in a correct match results while the manual one does not?

Can you provide steps on how to reproduce what you’re experiencing?
Upload an uncropped and a cropped version of a photo of a harbor seal. Make a manual annotation for the uncropped version.

Good questions; thanks for flagging them for us, @CindyE!

I’ll need to check in with my teammates to find out what’s going on with each of these issues.

Quick update: the differing iaClass names are a result of some ongoing cleanup and should be fixed soon. The disappearing viewpoints on hover are a known issue that we’re also looking into.

While I wait for the differing iaClass names issue to be resolved can I continue to create manual annotations? If I continue to make them with the out-of-date iaClasses will there be any issues for those annotations once everything is cleaned up? For example if I make a “harbour_seal” annotation now will it not be matched against for images with the future iaClasses? If that is the case then I will wait to make anymore manual annotations until the clean up has happened.

You can still manually annotate with the harbour_seal iaClass. My understanding is that “harbour_seal” and “vitulina” both refer to the body annotation that will eventually roll up under “harbour_seal”. You won’t be losing any data in the cleanup effort.
