Changing the field used for "unknown-coded" seals in Seals Wildbook

What Wildbook should this feature be in?

Seals Wildbook

What would you like to see?

We have been using Observation attribute unidentified_individual to give a unknown code (Unkxxx) to Saimaa ringed seals that we can’t match with known Phs-coded, known individual. For example Unk600. This could be added on the encounter page before, but I can’t find the field from the updated encounter page. We have been using Alternate ID (in Identity box) for Unk-codes in old Norppagalleria that was used before our data went to first Codex and after that to Seals Wildbook. I was wondering, could we use the Alternate ID field for Unk-code again?

How would this functionality help you?

We could see the Unk code in Alternate ID field also in the results table at least when using the Encounter search (classic). At the moment results table don’t show code.

Would we also be able to search multiple different Unk-coded encounter at the same time? (For example in Encounter search (classic) → Identity filters → Alternate ID is or contains: Unk → to find all Unk encounters)

Now I can only search for one code at the time and find all encounters that include that one code.

Would it be possible to change all existing Unk-codes from Observation attribute field to Alternate ID field from your end or is the only possible manually?

Note: Not all feature requests can be accepted, but all of them are reviewed by our product team. We’re unable to provide implementation timelines for accepted requests. We are a small team with many competing priorities. Thanks for your understanding!

Hi @PiiaMutka

I’m changing this to a support request for now because my initial impression is that something wasn’t accounted for in the metadata search in the move from Codex to Wildbook. I’ll need to discuss with the devs and follow up when I learn more.

OK, we’ve updated 760 encounters with a Unk value in unidentified_individual so that those Unk IDs appear now as Alternate IDs. Indexing is complete in the Classic Encounter Search (search results link) and should make finding and managing these encounters easier now.

This also had us working on adding alternate ID as a searchable field in the quicksearch in the top navigation of the site to save you (and anyone else who uses alternate IDs) a few clicks: Include Alternate ID in top nav Quicksearch · Issue #1452 · WildMeOrg/Wildbook · GitHub

Wonderful! Thank you! This really helps in many ways :star_struck:
