I noticed something weird in our fire salamander data set. There seems to be a difference between sexes assigned to encounters and individuals. I noticed this while matching. Many individuals are classified as “unknown”, although their encounter is correctly classified as female or male. On the merging page the individuals are listed as “unknown” then. Let me give you an example from our current Botanical Garden Bielefeld Adults 2026 project:
the indivivual BGBI_26-0003 currently has only one encounter. The encounter is classified “male”, but the individual page shows me “unknown” instead of “male”. If I were to merge the individual with another individual in the future the merging page would show me the individual sex “unknown” and not the correct one, which would make the merging more complicated because I have to separately check the sex of the encounter.
My question is: Is this a mistake in the ARW or did I make some mistake in the bulk import and just didn’t upload the individuals correctly in the first place? (the corresponding bulk import is: ARW_import_2026.xlsx).
The problem occured with quite a few individuals, maybe all I have uploaded recently and not matched and merged with other individuals yet.

Typically, I’d expected to see unknown sex on the Individual page if the first encounter of that individual did not have the sex labeled at the time the ID was assigned. When details about an individual are later updated at the encounter level, those don’t carry over to the individual page (like sex or taxonomy). Those would need to be manually updated from the individual page.
It sounds like you’re saying you did import these encounters with the sex included, so when the new IDs were added, it should have reflected that on the individual page, is that correct? If so, can you email us the spreadsheet for one of your recent imports to services@wildme.org so I can look into it?
Thanks for sending your spreadsheet! I talked to Jason and he says this will be corrected by the updated reindexing behavior in the latest version of Wildbook.
ARW is schedule to get the upgrade next week on Wednesday, so I’ll leave this open and check in with you to make sure the sex gets carried over to the individual page.

Now that ARW is on the newest version, can you let me know if you’re still not seeing the sex imported on new imports?

it doesn’t seem to have changed for the individuals I have uploaded before (the bulk imports I refered too). They still show unknown on the individual page although they are, for example, females on the encounter page.
For checking it with new imports, I first need to prepare some data, which will take some time again. But I will also check it there.
