Encounter.lifestage invalid in Bulk Import

What Wildbook are you working in?
Snail Wildbook

What is the entire URL out of the browser, exactly where the error occurred?
https://snails.wildme.org/react/bulk-import

Can you describe what the issue is you’re experiencing?
After importing the excel sheet into wildbook, it marked all of the values under the column Encounter.lifestage as invalid. It only has the options for “unknown, adult, calf, juvenile” which do not match the life stages for a snail. We have been using “Adult, Sub-adult, Juvenile”.

Can you provide steps on how to reproduce what you’re experiencing?
I started a bulk import, uploaded the photos and then uploaded the excel sheet with our current life stage values. It then marked all of these values as invalid.

Thanks for letting us know! I’ll follow up with an update soon.

I’ve just updated the file and verified that sub-adult is now showing up instead of calf. Thanks for flagging this!

Thank you so much Anastasia! It works great now!

Hi Anastasia!

Would it be possible to make the lifestage values uppercase? Right now all of our data is in uppercase and the bulk import won’t accept it as such. We can change our spreadsheets to match, but if it was an easy fix on your side that would be super helpful!

unknown → Unknown
adult → Adult
sub-adult → Sub-adult
juvenile → Juvenile

The standard across Wildbooks is to keep these values lowercase. Because the values are case-sensitive, it means “adult” and “Adult” are considered different values and that an encounter search for “adult” would exclude snails listed as “Adult” from the search.

Now that I think on it more, we may need to go back and look at updating current encounter data, because I’m pretty confident that bulk import did not validate whether the life stage was written in lowercase or not prior to the redesign.

For example, a search for “sub-adult” has 15 results and another search for “Sub-adult” has 233 results.

I need to discuss with the devs to see what makes sense for next steps.

Thank you for this clarification! We will update our spreadsheets to reflect the lowercase value for bulk imports moving forward.

Our bulk imports prior to the redesign allowed for uppercase values and up until this most recent import, all of our life stage values are uppercase. Please keep us posted on the next steps to fix this! Thank you!
