Image detection

What Wildbook are you working in?
ARW
What is the entire URL out of the browser, exactly where the error occurred?

Can you describe what the issue is you’re experiencing?
I’ve bulk uploaded pictures and I cannot send them to identification right away as usual but need to send them to detection first. Detection needs a very long time
Can you provide steps on how to reproduce what you’re experiencing?

If this is a bulk import report, send the spreadsheet to services@wildme.org with the email subject line matching your bug report

Hi @LauraSchulte

This is a new change that we are requiring. You will need to kick off ID after detection. A second button will appear once detection is complete.

In the old system where detection+ID could be run together, the system ran ID as soon as detection was done, which meant that in a large bulk import queue, some ID jobs were started before all of the images had completed detection. This had two results:

  1. HotSpotter matching was slower because every ID job presented a different list of annotations, forcing continuous recaching.

  2. ID jobs has ncomplete results because not every annotation inside a bulk import was ready. This meant that sometimes potential matches from inside the bulk import itself were not considered.

Currently, we’re forcing the entire detection phase to complete before ID can be manually kicked off. This prevents the situations above.

We may look to restore some of th automation (e.g., proceed to bulk ID only after bulk detection thoroughly completes), but for now running bulk detection and ID as separate phases…while it requires a second button click to kick off ID…should speed ID and make it more accurate by including all potential matches, including all of those inside the bulk import itself.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the quick response! And good to know, thanks!

Another user has issues with a large dataset (>600 pictures) that was uploaded on Oct 24 and still the detection did not get through: Amphibian and Reptile Wildbook | Login
Although its a lot of pictures, it shouldn’t take days, right?

Hi @LauraSchulte

There are 638 media assets in that bulk upload, and you’ll notice that 637 have made it through detection. There is one image holding up the process. I will take a look.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi @LauraSchulte

This imported Encounter:

Has a corrupted or misassigned image:

It looks like a small gray box.

Can you please remove this image from the Encounter and add the correct one?

After that, the bulk import will will show 638/638 media assets are ready for detection and allow the button to be pushed. The import can only proceed to detection if all media assets are ready.

Thanks,
Jason

We will have a look at that, thanks!

Hi Jason,

The other user deleted this upload, checked the pictures and reuploaded the > 600 pictures again Amphibian and Reptile Wildbook | Login
She reported that the detection took 2,5 days to complete and identification more than two days as well. That seems to be way too long, right?

Best,
Laura

Hi @LauraSchulte

If there is no other large-scale processing going on, 600 images should get through detection in less than a day. If there are other bulk imports processing, especially large volumes of ID jobs, then it may take longer.

Thanks,
Jason
