Mark Recapture Export – Nested Locations on Sharkbook

What Wildbook are you working in?

Sharkbook

What is the entire URL out of the browser, exactly where the error occurred?

Can you describe what the issue is you’re experiencing?

I think I’ve run into an edge case here. I’m trying to download the sighting history of the east Australian Carcharias taurus population. There are multiple locations nested under ‘East Australia’, and it appears from previous discussions here on the forum that mark-recapture histories can only be exported for a single location… but the ‘child’ locations don’t get included in a search on East Australia alone.

Any suggestions on how to proceed here? Ideally I’d be able to search for East Australia and have the output include all the sub-locations nested underneath.

It won’t allow me to paste the URL.

Hi @simonjpierce

Just selecting East Australia from the menu will only show results for East Australia. Looking at the link you sent me, it doesn’t look like the sub-locations were selected as part of the original search, but let me know if that’s not the case and I can do some bug hunting with the devs.

You’ll need to hold CTRL on a PC or CMD on a Mac while you click on additional locations nested beneath East Australia in a Classic Encounter Search or select each location individually in a regular Encounter Search.

The problem is that, though I selected all locations, none of those encounters came through in the output. I think it’s because, though East Australia is the parent location, all of the C. taurus encounters are associated with sublocations.

It looks like this is actually the ‘correct’ behaviour, i.e. from the docs:

… which is fine, IF the parent location can pull sightings from its sublocations.

We’re going to see if we can workaround this from the standard Excel report, but I wanted to flag it, as it’ll be problematic for multi-location mark-recapture studies.

Let me discuss with the devs and find out more. This single location ID restriction seems arbitrarily limiting.

Hi @simonjpierce

I fixed the issue with you not being able to post links. Can you try posting the link to the search again? In order to troubleshoot, I need to know if this happened in the new search or the classic search, and if it was an encounter or individual search.
