Poor Match Accuracy in ARW

What Wildbook are you working in?
Amphibian and Reptile Wildbook
What is the entire URL out of the browser, exactly where the error occurred?

Can you describe what the issue is you’re experiencing?
I am matching photos of post-metamorph fire salamanders in the project Botanischer Garten Bielefeld Adults. However, the suggested matches are generally very poor in accuracy when clicking on inspect. For example, this is a recapture: but the patterns that were recognized by the software are all over the place but not the patterns of coloration of the fire salamander: https://amphibian.hydra.dyn.wildme.io/api/query/graph/match/thumb/?extern_reference=jeuzkpbhibpqmnzy&query_annot_uuid=b3ea238c-8161-4aee-86cc-308b6279c284&database_annot_uuid=3adcd0b3-9531-46c2-8a04-376d2bb549c4&version=heatmask
Or here for another example:
https://amphibian.hydra.dyn.wildme.io/api/query/graph/match/thumb/?extern_reference=yxgpxipbobdrhivs&query_annot_uuid=2ff2af11-7f9e-4ddd-810b-327401add2bc&database_annot_uuid=2da7764f-a806-4461-922e-58770882cf48&version=heatmask

I am wondering if this has a) to be with the photo quality or b) the changes we made after my last request (ARW - High frequency of no matches provided and no matches found despite known recaptures in a large dataset of adult fire salamanders - #10 by Max.Muehlenhaupt)?
However, in the project Uni Bielefeld - Adults Kottenforst, the suggested reoccurring patterns shown after clicking on “inspect” are generally better: e.g.: https://amphibian.hydra.dyn.wildme.io/api/query/graph/match/thumb/?extern_reference=fnrcteuhemdkuppp&query_annot_uuid=d4472d76-4d0e-441c-ac53-32a0dc4de3fe&database_annot_uuid=3ce6cf6d-39d9-4191-982e-51719c5c6ff2&version=heatmask and https://amphibian.hydra.dyn.wildme.io/api/query/graph/match/thumb/?extern_reference=msxlqxplylhupsbo&query_annot_uuid=dcdb057a-a7d2-4b55-a38c-fd0967b54346&database_annot_uuid=4a769e20-1d0d-4929-85e6-f8544cfa7a58&version=heatmask

Which make sme wonder if this problem is rather related to the specific project (botanischer Garten) or the image quality than a general problem with the software?

Can you provide steps on how to reproduce what you’re experiencing?

If this is a bulk import report, send the spreadsheet to services@wildme.org with the email subject line matching your bug report

Hi @Max.Muehlenhaupt

This is significant background mtching, which is normally reduced via the background segmentation network. I am checking whether that is turn on for the detector model as our repot shows we trained it.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi @Max.Muehlenhaupt

After reviewing this with an ML Engineer, I do think this is a result of turning off spatial verification. Without spatial verification on, HotSpotter will try to find pattern matches in the image but not check if they’re in the same part of the image. I think if we turn it back on, we will see this go away.

Do you concur?

Thanks,
Jason

Hi @jason ,

yes, I agree.

Thanks,
Max

Hi @Max.Muehlenhaupt

Spatial verification is back on.

Thanks,
Jason

Thanks @jason , the matching works well now within the project
