Question about data back-ups (SeadragonSearch)

Hi all, just want to clarify some questions about data back-up (either on here or maybe there is a link with more info?)

How often does our SeadragonSearch data get backed up?
Do older versions get written over and what is the timeline for that?
If someone accidentally deleted something, what would our options be?
How far back in time can we restore things?

Thanks for clarification!

Hi @ChrissyTustison

How often does our SeadragonSearch data get backed up?

Nightly we do a full backup in Azure. This is Azure managed.

Do older versions get written over and what is the timeline for that?

Full server copies get held for one week in Azure, though the way we do nightly backups actually allows for restores going back several months via image retention and database export and backup.

If someone accidentally deleted something, what would our options be?

It depends.

  • The source images and spreadsheet for a bulk import are stored on the server. Wild Me has the ability to rebuild these if the customer does not still have the local copy of their own data.

  • Marked individuals and Occurrences/Sightings are just a shell around the encounter data they contain. There is no undo process, but they can be easily recreated manually, and to delete one requires the manual removal of all of their encounters. It is therefore hard to accidentally delete one.

  • A deleted Encounter can be manually recreated by an admin, but we are tracking a bug related to this feature (recent code changes have broken it). This rarely occurs but it one area we are looking to fix.

How far back in time can we restore things?

Explicitly via Azure-based server restore, one week. Practically, we can generally go back a few months further based on how we backup and save database and image content. The reason we don’t go back years is that the backups do significantly eat up disk space and drive up our server costs dramatically.

Note: we have the ability to alter this per server. If you need longer retention, please let us know.

Thanks,
Jason
