What Wildbook are you working in? Sharkbook
Can you describe what the issue is you’re experiencing? I am trying to use Sharkbook to see if we can re-identify juvenile sevengill sharks as they grow. Their spot pattern changes a little, but there are some conserved primary spots that look like they remain. I had tagged a small juvenile, and 1.5 years later, a fisher recaptured the animal with the tag in it and sent me a photo of the left side of the face. But, when I spot map both the original and recapture photo, Sharkbook isn’t coming up with the correct match in the list of options. We want to basically make Sharkbook match the 2, and run a percent match between the 2, so we can evaluate if Sharkbook can re-ID juvenile sevengills as they grow. Is there a way to manually have Sharkbook calculate the percent match between the two photos?
Can you provide steps on how to reproduce what you’re experiencing? I have logged the animal as J034 in Sharkbook. When I go to scan Sharkbook for matches, the actual match doesn’t appear as an option. I’ve attached the photos of the recaptured animal here.

Hi @oseascience, welcome!
Can you share the links to the encounters these images are from so we can take a look?
Tagging @jason for visibility.
I think this is the link you need? I manually added this as the same individual.
That’s the individual page, but I can find both encounters from there. Thanks!

Thanks for your patience!
The spot mapping you did was thorough and the images are clear. This just looks like an instance of a missed match which will occasionally happen in spot mapping and computer vision.
I do see that the second encounter matched to itself in the results, but that’s less helpful than if it had found the match from the first encounter from a few days prior.
That said, this is in the range of expected behavior but I understand it feels more concerning when this is among the first bits of data you’re testing the system with. You should see more consistent results as you upload more data.
Let me know if you have more questions or concerns.
Thanks, Anastasia! Can you tell me if there’s a way to see the algorighms calculations of accuracy between the 2 photos? When it provides suggested matches, it will provide a percent or likelihood estimate, but as I uploaded and manually matched this individual, I can’t find if the program is able to compare the two photos, if that makes sense. We are hoping to evaluate how well sharkbook is able to match these two photos of a confirmed recapture in a proposal for a project
Not on the front end, but I can check in with the machine learning team to see what I can find out for you.
Amazing, thank you so much!

I heard back today. We show almost all scores in the scan task results, so the score would effectively be 0 if it didn’t come up in matching.
Ok, got it, thank you for your help!
