Too Many Individuals in the System (Zebra Wildbook - Grevy's zebra)

Hi Anastasia,
I have over 400 individuals in the system for a 3 months of data (Jan 2025 - March 2025). From my experience in this landscape, I expect at most 310 individuals. Could there be a potential of the system not properly completing the matching process, hence, potential for the same animal being detected as another unique individual?
Thank you

Hi @Timothy

The match candidates you see are determined by the location ID, species, and viewpoint. Let’s say you only have left side photos of Bob the zebra. An unassigned right side photo of the same zebra might not necessarily be displayed as a match candidate if the source encounter is of his left side.

If you’re worried about missing potential matches for a zebra, you can go to the image menu of an encounter and choose “start another match.” Then under the Choose algorithm menu you can select both Hotspotter and MiewID. Hotspotter takes a bit longer to return results, but it can be helpful to compare both algorithms’ results side-by-side since one may return some matches that the other doesn’t.

If you later find out that two separate individuals are actually the same zebra, you can refer to the Merging FAQ in our help docs to combine them into one ID.

Hi Anastasia.
I am achieving some outcomes from your recommendation. How such mis-identification (same individual with different identity) happened in large magnitude cannot be explained on my end. I will endeavour to go through each entry for the last 2 months data and rectify.
Thank you
